Russia is a country steeped in rich culture and history, but it is also known for its controversial laws. In 2012, Russia passed a law that requires all websites hosting message boards, comments or other interactive content to use an electronic system provided by the government. This system contains a list of all banned websites and topics, and any website that allows access to this content is subject to punishment. Additionally, a law passed in 2014 required websites to store the personal data of their users inside of Russia. This law has been criticized as a way to limit the freedom of expression and information by limiting the abilities of citizens to access foreign websites.

One of the most well-known laws in Russia is the infamous "gay propaganda" law. This law, which was passed in 2013, made it illegal to promote any "non-traditional" relationships, which essentially criminalized homosexuality in Russia. This law has been strongly criticized by civil rights activists and human rights organizations around the world, as it is seen as an attack on LGBTQ+ rights and freedoms.
