The History of Russian Sports Teams

The roots of Russian sports can be traced all the way back to the 15th century. During this period of time, tsars such as Ivan the Terrible, Peter the Great, and Catherine the Great all promoted physical fitness, encouraging their subjects to play games such as hammer throwing, archery, and wrestling. At the same time, the presence of the military in Russian culture also provided the opportunity for warriors to participate in mock battles, offering the general population a chance to get involved in combat-style competitions.

During the 19th century, sports such as football (soccer), ice hockey, and basketball began to gain in popularity, allowing the Russian people to embrace a broader range of organized sports and leagues. At the same time, the Soviet Union began to be a major player in the international sports arena, with iconic athletes such as Vassily Alexeyev, Nikolai Andrianov, and Valentina Vezzali earning gold medals in various Olympic events.

Since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russian sports have seen a major upsurge. Now Russia can boast teams with national and international success in a wide variety of sport, from football and volleyball to ice hockey and figure skating.

Popular Russian Sports and Leagues

As with any country, the most popular sports in Russia depend on the region and tastes of the population. Football, otherwise known as soccer in some countries, is the most beloved team sport in Russia and attracts fans from all over the world. The Russian Premier League, as well as the Russian Football Championship, are the top two tiers of league play. Each league has 16 teams competing against one another throughout the course of the season. Russia is also very fond of volleyball, chess, and ice hockey and has celebrated several national successes in each of these sports over the years. Folk sports and martial arts are also popular, which can be seen in remarkable festivals such as the International Army Games.

Supporting Russian Teams

When it comes to investing in sports teams, the ultimate goal is to give those teams and their athletes the financial support they need to reach their full potential. Fortunately, there are many ways to do this in Russia. The Russian government runs the All-Russian Musical and Sports Festival, giving fans the opportunity to donate funds to the different teams competing in the events. Local clubs are always looking for volunteers to help them with practice and tournaments, so you can join one and donate your time and energy. Additionally, there are several sports foundations all around Russia, such as the Hockey Heroes Foundation, that are working to provide athletes with the support and resources they need to reach their goals.
