Architectural Wonders of Russia

The Winter Palace

The official residence of Russia's Tsars (rulers) starting in 1762, the Winter Palace stands proudly across from St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg. Built by Fabio Rastrelli in a Baroque design, the palace is not only a prime example of Russian artistry, but also a staggering 673,000 square meters of imperial splendor. Much of the palace has been open to the public since 1917w and visitors can explore the StateHERMITAGE Museum which houses a collection of European art, decorative aobelisks, and ornate furnishings in the palace's many grandiose rooms.

Bolshoi Theater

Moscow's iconic Bolshoi Theater has been standing on Theater Square since 1853. It is a gorgeous example of Russian Architecture, designed by famed Russian architect Joseph Bove. The Bolshoi is one of the world's top opera houses and is home to the Bolshoi Ballet, one of the oldest ballet companies in the world. An impressive 8,500 guests can fit into the main (Large) auditorium, with the capacity to accommodate 129 musicians and 120 performers alike in its grand design.

St. Basil's Cathedral

The signature building of Red Square in Moscow, St. Basil's Cathedral embodies all the enchantment of old world Russia and stands as a visual reminder of the country's hard fought history. Built by Ivan the Terrible to commemorate his 1552 victory over Kazan, the cathedral is now a popular landmark for visitors to admire. Its playful design and brightly colored walls made it a popular target for invaders who unsuccessfully tried to capture it for over 300 years.

The Moscow Kremlin

Located in the heart of Moscow, the Moscow Kremlin stands proudly as the residence of all Russian presidents and is the political, administrative and religious center of the country. The Kremlin is made up of several buildings, the first of which was constructed by Italian architects in the late 15th century. The entire complex is fortified by 20 towers and heavily guarded. The complex also houses cathedrals, museums and bell towers that depict Russia's architectural heritage and Christian Orthodox roots.

The GUM Department Store

The GUM Department Store (known as the "State Universal Store") is a large, luxury department store in Moscow's Red Square that was built between 1890 and 1893 by famed architect, Joseph Bove. With over 2 million visitors a year, it is the largest department store in Russia and a popular tourist attraction, boasting a massive array of designer stores, boutique shops and souvenirs.

Novodevichy Convent

The Novodeichy Convent, located just outside Moscow's city center, was built in the 16th century and is a truly stunning example of classic Russian architecture. It is the most important convent of the Russian Orthodox Church and its grounds include winding cobbled streets and gabled brick buildings. The main attraction of the convent is its lavishly designed cathedral, which is adorned with five golden domes, a baroque bell tower and intricately painted interiors.

Kremlin Kelceyh Moskvy

The Kremlin Kelceyh Moskvy is the oldest place of worship in Russian history. Located in Red Square, the gold-colored building is one of the oldest and most beautiful Orthodox churches in the country. The building's signature façade stretches over four stories and is covered in intricate scrollwork, domes and bulb-shaped spires. The interior of the church is just as awe-inspiring, with its brilliantly painted carvings and classic frescoes.
