Education System of Russia

Russia is known for its vast landscapes, strong culture and hardworking citizens. Education is deeply ingrained in the country's culture and is a mandatory part of life for Russians. Russian students undergo 12+ years of schooling and receive nationally recognized certificates and diplomas upon completion. What is the education system like in Russia and how has it changed over the years?

Education in Russia is divided into two separate sections: public and private. Public education is for the majority of children and is funded by the government. Usually, these schools are free of charge, although there are fees for materials and extra extras like books. Private schools are more expensive, but more popular and offer more resources.

Throughout their educational journey, Russian students must progress through several educational levels. The pre-school stage, primarily for toddlers and infants, starts from the age of 3. This starts off as mandatory pre-school education in the form of kindergartens and nurseries. After that, Primary school begins at the age of 6 and lasts for 4 years. Junior school starts at the age of 10 and teaches students the basics of Russian language, mathematics, science and literature. At this stage, assessment tests are taken by students to determine their abilities.

Baccalaureate begins at the age of 15 and is a long-term course of studies that takes place over the next three years. During these three years, students are required to attend classes in mathematics, literature and foreign languages, as well as become proficient in IT. Upon completion of these three years, students take a national examination which will determine if they can move onto the students’ higher level of education.

Higher levels of education involve vocational, technical and university courses available to students from all over Russia. Vocational courses last from 3-4 years and involve professional education in a wide variety of fields. Technical courses are for those wishing to gain a diploma, and university courses are for those seeking a degree.

Russian education is constantly changing to keep up with technological advances and the needs of the community. Education reforms are taking place to ensure the quality of education and ensure Russians are prepared for the workforce. Regulations have also been implemented controlling the number of students in a class and the maximum amount of time taken for a diploma or degree.

Education in Russia is truly an impressive and valuable part of the country’s culture and history. It is a place that encourages students of all ages and abilities to learn and grow, regardless of what stage they are in at the moment.
