Exploring the Role of Orphanages in Russia

For many countries, including Russia, caring for the needy and orphaned is a major part of society. From humanitarian actions to charitable organizations, the socialization of citizens in Russia often centers around the wellbeing of its most vulnerable members. But what about the state of its orphanages? How have these populated centers influenced the country’s children, and what is their current status?

The understanding of the role of orphanages in Russia is based on the country’s long history of helping those in need. Its welfare system established back in the Soviet Union played a major role in the lives of many citizens. During the era, individuals without a home were provided with a place to stay along with basic subsistence funds. As such, government-run orphanages were established in major cities.

The purpose of these facilities was to provide a home for children who were not capable of leading a normal life or were unable to stay with their families or guardians. Thus, those placed in orphanages were isolated from the public and their assigned crews of staff members. In some cases, this resulted in the orphanages being overcrowded and neglected.

While reforms have improved the state of many orphanages in Russia, a lack of funding and support has resulted in large numbers of children still needing help. In 2016, for example, it was reported that nearly 1 million orphans were living in the country, a number that has been on the rise since.

This has been partially attributed to social stigma, with many parents feeling ashamed of having a child in an orphanage. As a result, an increasing number of children are in need of care, with many children choosing to live in the streets rather than being placed in an orphanage.

Despite such challenges, the civil society movement in Russia has started to develop a number of initiatives to help those in need. Over the years, voluntary funds and organizations have been created to help provide shelter and other social benefits to children without family or financial support. For example, there is the charity Carers of Russia, which provides medical and educational assistance to orphanages across the country. It recently opened its first Saturday School in Moscow, offering primary and secondary education to kids living in orphanages.

The role of orphanages in Russia might have its flaws, but the progress made over the years by charitable organizations and civil society groups should not be ignored. It is inspiring to see such amazing work being done by those who are genuinely dedicated to helping those most in need.
