One of the earliest Russian authors to rise to worldwide fame was the 19th century writer, Ivan Turgenev. His works were known for their richly drawn characters and enticing plotlines. He also gained fame for his short stories, which explored a range of human experiences and emotions. He is perhaps best known for his verse tale 'Fathers and Sons.' This story deals with the complex issue of generational conflict between generations of land-owning families.

The great Anton Chekhov is another famed Russian author. He is known for his unique writing style, with characters often expressing mixed emotions. He is also renowned for creating what is known as the 'Chekhovian Moment' in which a character will experience a sudden change in attitude or opinion as they face a difficult situation. His stories often end with a stillness that feels both empty and eerily complete. Some of Chekhov’s most famous works include 'The Lady with the Dog,' 'The Seagull,' and 'The Cherry Orchard.'

No discussion of Russian writers is complete without mentioning the famous auteur, Leo Tolstoy. He is celebrated for his extensive works, which often spanned multiple volumes. Some of his most well-known books include 'War and Peace' and 'Anna Karenina.' These books are lauded for their carefully constructed periods of reflection, philosophy, characterization and metaphor. His works are vastly considered some of the best of all of Russian literature.

The Russian classics are renowned for their stunning characters and narrative styles, many of which have been adapted into visual mediums, with Tolstoy's 'War and Peace' recently producing a hit mini-series on the BBC.
