Understanding the Changing Social Norms in Russia

The country of Russia is vast and has been a region of vast change over the last century, from the feudal system before the fall of the Tsar, to the struggle during the reign of the Soviet Union, to the modernization of the post-Soviet era. As the country has evolved, so have its social customs and norms in many ways. Here, we look at the ways the changing social norms in Russia have impacted the people and culture of the region.

Despite the long-term trends of progress, Russians continue to accept the traditional family values and their society is still shaped by customs that define gender roles and attitudes toward marriage, divorce, career, education, and even leisure activities. For example, according to a Russian government website, the average Russian family consists of a married couple and one or two children while extramarital relationships are frowned upon.

However, sociologists point out that there is some weakening of those traditional values, due to the increasing influence of Western culture and the increasing influence of feminism in Russia. Some young women are starting to pursue higher education and leadership roles in society, and men are becoming more involved in the parenting process.

Social attitudes towards same-sex relationships, too, have changed quite significantly due to greater acceptance of LGBT rights in the west, and greater awareness in Russia about the issue. This is reflected in the legal regulations in several regions of Russia and in the growing number of LGBT groups in the country.

These changes in the social norms of Russia have been met with mixed reactions. For example, many older generations are wary of the changes that are taking place, while younger generations tend to embrace them more. In some cases, it has led to conflicts between younger and older generations, with traditional values and the ways of life of the older generation being challenged by the younger generations. It is clear that the social norms in Russia are in a state of flux. Ultimately, the changes taking place in society will evolve depending on the level of acceptance on both sides of the generations. Social progress in Russia is likely to be slow, but understanding the changing social norms will be an important step in aiding the evolution of society in the region.
